What your photos reveal about you
A photograph is not only a picture. Alongside the pixels, most cameras write a block of metadata: when it was taken, on what, with which settings, and - if location services were on - precisely where. Share the original file and that travels with it. This is what is actually in there, and what you can and cannot do about it.
Short answer
Most phone photographs contain GPS coordinates accurate to a few metres, plus the camera model and a timestamp. Removing the metadata deletes all of that. It does not change what is visible in the picture itself.
What is actually stored
The main block is EXIF, written by the camera. It commonly holds the GPS latitude and longitude, often an altitude and a compass direction; the make and model of the device; the date and time to the second; and the exposure settings. Editing software can add more - XMP and IPTC blocks carrying the software used, an author name, edit history, sometimes a copyright line.
None of it is visible when you look at the picture, which is the whole difficulty. It is in the file, and any software that reads the file can read it.
Where it matters
The case people think of is a photograph taken at home and posted publicly. The coordinates are precise enough to identify a building.
The cases that catch people more often are quieter: a picture sent to a marketplace buyer, a photograph attached to a support ticket, an image handed to a contractor, a screenshot of a document that also carries the device it was taken on. None of those feel like publishing, and all of them pass the original file to somebody.
What removing metadata does
It deletes the recorded facts: the coordinates, the camera, the timestamp, the software trail. The pixels are untouched, so the picture is unchanged.
- Open the GPS removal tool and drop the photograph in.
- Read what it found. Most people are surprised by the amount.
- Remove it, and download the cleaned copy.
- Share that copy, and keep the original if you want the location data for yourself.
What it does not do
It does not change what the picture shows. A street sign, a shopfront, a view from a window or a recognisable skyline identifies a place whether or not the file says so. Any tool claiming that stripping metadata makes a photograph anonymous is overstating; this one reads metadata and makes no claim about the scene.
It does not undo sharing that has already happened. And it does not depend on a platform's behaviour - most large social networks do strip EXIF when they re-encode an upload, but that is their current policy rather than your guarantee, it varies, and it does nothing for a photo you email or message as a file.

- No. A screenshot is a new image made by your device from what was on screen, and it carries its own metadata rather than the original's. It is a crude but genuinely effective way to strip everything - at the cost of the picture's resolution and quality.
- Can I stop my phone recording location in the first place?
- Yes, and it is the better fix if you never want it. Both major phone platforms let you withhold location access from the camera specifically, in the privacy or location settings. Existing photographs keep what they already recorded, which is what this tool is for.
