A form asking for a square picture, an avatar, a product thumbnail, any slot that wants equal sides at a modest size. Because your photograph almost certainly has different proportions, the page asks what should happen to the difference rather than deciding for you: crop the overflow, fit the whole picture inside, or force both numbers and accept the distortion.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if my image is not 1:1?
Whatever you choose. Crop to fill scales until the 600 x 600 box is covered and trims what hangs over, so you get the exact size with the edges gone. Fit inside scales the whole picture until it fits, so nothing is lost and one side comes out shorter than the box. Stretch forces both numbers and changes the shape of everything in the picture. The default is crop to fill, because an exact size is usually the reason somebody came.
The form wants 600 x 600 and my photo is rectangular. What now?
Crop to fill gives you the exact square by trimming the long sides, which is what almost every form expects and what a face photograph usually wants anyway. If the subject is off-centre, crop it yourself first so you choose what stays - a centred automatic crop does not know where the face is, and this page does not analyse the picture.
Will a small photo be enlarged to 600 x 600?
Yes for crop to fill and stretch. At 0.36 megapixels the source is almost always bigger, so this reduces rather than enlarges. If your picture is smaller than 600 on one side, the form's minimum is the real problem and no resize can solve it honestly.
