Make an Instagram profile picture
Instagram stores a profile photo at 320 pixels square and displays it far smaller than that almost everywhere - beside a comment it is a few dozen pixels across.
The practical consequence is that detail is nearly irrelevant and contrast is nearly everything: whatever is in the picture has to be recognisable at thumbnail size or it may as well not be there.
How to make an Instagram profile picture

- Pick a size. 320 x 320 is the recommendation; the larger option stays sharper on a high-density screen.
- Let it crop square and centre. Check the result before you download it.
- Download, and upload that copy to your profile.

What size should a Instagram profile picture be?
320 x 320 is the size independent references consistently report for Instagram, and this page defaults to it with a larger option beside it. Platforms change display sizes without announcing it and re-encode what they receive, so treat it as the size that works rather than a specification Instagram is bound to.
Why does my Instagram profile picture look blurry?
Usually because it was uploaded smaller than the stored size and enlarged, or because it was a heavily compressed screenshot to begin with. Starting from a larger, sharp original and letting the crop reduce it gives a better result than handing the app something small.
Why is my face cut off in the circle?
The square is masked to a circle, and at Instagram's size the loss is proportionally larger than it looks - the picture is small to begin with, so the corners you lose are a real share of what anybody sees. Centre the face and accept that anything decorative around the edges will not survive.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser. The download has its metadata removed, including any GPS coordinates - worth knowing for a picture you are about to attach to a public profile.
