Compress a JPG
JPEG is the format most photographs are stored in, and it is also the one that responds best to compression.
Drop a JPG in, choose how aggressive to be, and download a much smaller file that still looks like the original.
How to compress a JPG
- Drop a JPG file onto the upload area, or choose one from your device.
- Move the quality slider, or switch to target size and type the size you need.
- Check the preview against the original.
- Download the compressed JPG.
Supported formats
This tool accepts JPG files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
Because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels, EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS coordinates does not carry into the result. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photographs stay the right way up. Embedded colour profiles are also dropped and the output is saved as sRGB, which can shift colours slightly in wide-gamut photographs. Animated files are refused rather than being flattened to a single frame.
Frequently asked questions
Is my JPG uploaded anywhere?
No. Your JPG is read straight from disk into the page and compressed there. Nothing about it reaches a server, which matters more than usual for photographs: a JPG straight off a camera usually carries GPS coordinates in its metadata.
Is the JPG compressor free?
Yes, completely, and there is no limit on how many JPGs you compress. Nothing here is a trial that expires or a free tier that quietly runs out.
What quality setting should I use?
Quality 75 is a good default for photos on the web and typically cuts file size by around 70%. Use 85-90 for images that will be printed or cropped later, and 60-65 when size matters more than fine detail, such as email attachments.
Can I compress a JPG to an exact file size?
Yes. Switch the mode to target size and enter a limit, for example 200 KB. The tool repeatedly re-encodes at different quality levels to find the highest quality that fits under your limit, then tells you which quality it used.
Does compressing a JPG twice make it worse?
Yes. Every lossy save discards detail permanently, and the losses accumulate. Always compress from the original file rather than from a previously compressed copy.
What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?
Nothing. They are the same format. The three-letter .jpg extension exists because older versions of Windows only allowed three characters. This tool accepts .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe and .jfif.
