Check a photo against Shopify's image requirements
Shopify is different from the marketplaces in a way worth saying first: it is your own store, so almost nothing is a rule.
What exists are platform limits and what themes expect, and those still decide whether a product grid looks even. This measures your image against both, and is clear about which is which.
How to check a photo against Shopify's image requirements
- Drop in the product photograph. It is measured in this page, not uploaded.
- Read the verdict: what passed, what failed, and what could not be checked.
- Fix what needs fixing - the resize and compress tools are linked from the result.
- Check it again, and read the list of things only you can judge.
Supported formats
This tool accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
Frequently asked questions
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify's own documentation says 2,048 x 2,048 usually displays best for a square product image, and most themes lay products out in a square grid - large enough to zoom, square enough that the grid stays even. Your theme is still the real authority, and it may differ.
Do my product images have to be square?
Not by the platform, but usually by your theme. A grid of mixed shapes crops unevenly and reads as untidy, which is the actual problem people are trying to solve when they ask this. Picking one shape and keeping to it matters more than which shape it is.
Is there a file size limit?
Shopify documents up to 5,000 x 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and under 20MB - well above what a well-prepared product photograph needs. The practical constraint is page speed rather than that ceiling: a grid of twenty large images is slow regardless of whether each one is permitted.
What can this not check?
Anything your theme decides, which is most of it, and everything about styling. It measures the file against the platform's limits and the shape a typical theme expects - the rest is your store.
