Convert PNG to JPG
Turn a PNG into a much smaller JPEG. Because JPEG has no transparency, any transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose - white by default.
How to convert PNG to JPG
- Drop one PNG file or a whole folder of them onto the upload area.
- Pick the JPG quality and the background colour for transparent areas.
- Compare the file sizes.
- Download the JPG, or the whole batch as a ZIP.
Supported formats
This tool accepts PNG files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
Because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels, EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS coordinates does not carry into the result. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photographs stay the right way up. Embedded colour profiles are also dropped and the output is saved as sRGB, which can shift colours slightly in wide-gamut photographs. Animated files are refused rather than being flattened to a single frame.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a whole folder at once?
Yes, and the two settings that matter - the JPG quality and the colour that replaces transparency - apply to every file in the batch rather than being asked per image. That is worth a thought before you start: a white background is right for most PNGs and wrong for a logo you were going to place on a dark page, and in a folder of a hundred you will not see each one go past. Anything that cannot be read is refused by name as you add it, rather than being silently dropped, and the rest still come back as a ZIP.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Your PNG is converted on your own device. That matters for screenshots in particular, which often contain information you would not want passing through someone else's server.
Is the converter free?
Yes, free and unlimited, with no account required and nothing added to the converted image.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparency has to become a solid colour. This tool paints the chosen background behind the image before encoding - white by default. Without that step transparent pixels would come out black.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photographs saved as PNG the saving is dramatic, often 80-90%. For flat graphics, logos and screenshots the difference is smaller, and JPEG can even look worse because it blurs sharp edges. Those are better kept as PNG or converted to WebP.
Will I lose quality converting PNG to JPG?
Yes, JPEG is lossy. At quality 85 or above the difference is very hard to see on photographs. On text, screenshots and line art you may notice halos around sharp edges at any quality.
Guides
- Why PNG files are so largePNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, so it cannot throw away detail to save space. To make one smaller, either reduce how many distinct colours it stores - which is lossless for what remains and very effective on screenshots - or convert to JPEG or WebP if the image is a photograph.
- JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you use?Photographs: JPG, or WebP if everything downstream accepts it. Screenshots, diagrams, text, flat colour or transparency: PNG, or WebP. When in doubt and it is going on a website, WebP. When in doubt and it is going into a form, JPG.
