What size should a X profile picture be?
400 x 400 is the size independent references consistently report for X, and this page defaults to it with a larger option beside it. Platforms change display sizes without announcing it and re-encode what they receive, so treat it as the size that works rather than a specification X is bound to.
Does X compress my profile picture?
Yes - it re-encodes uploads to its own settings, which is why a picture can look slightly softer after uploading than it did on your machine. You cannot avoid that, but you can give it a clean, sharp, correctly sized image to start from, which produces a better result than handing it something already compressed.
Why is my face cut off in the circle?
X draws a circle inside your square, and the timeline renders it small, so the corners are both removed and hardly missed. The thing that actually goes wrong here is a face that is too far away: crop closer than feels comfortable and it will read better in a timeline.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The crop happens in this page, and the file you download has its metadata removed. X re-encodes uploads and generally strips metadata itself, but that is its behaviour rather than your guarantee.
