Supported formats
This tool accepts JPG files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
Because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels, EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS coordinates does not carry into the result. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photographs stay the right way up. Embedded colour profiles are also dropped and the output is saved as sRGB, which can shift colours slightly in wide-gamut photographs. Animated files are refused rather than being flattened to a single frame.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a whole folder at once?
Yes. Add as many JPGs as you like and each one is decoded and re-saved as a PNG in turn, then downloaded together as a ZIP. Nothing about the conversion varies per file, so there is no setting to get wrong halfway through a batch. Do watch the total size: PNGs of photographs are several times larger than their JPGs, so a folder that arrived as 40 MB can leave as 200 MB. A file that is damaged or is not really a JPG is refused as you add it, named individually so you know which one, and the rest of the batch is unaffected.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. Your image is never uploaded, which also means there is no size limit imposed by our bandwidth, only by what your device can hold in memory.
Is the converter free?
Yes, and there is no cap on file count or file size beyond what your own device can handle.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
That is expected. JPG is lossy and PNG is lossless, so the PNG has to store every pixel exactly, including the compression artefacts already baked into the JPEG. Converting a photo to PNG typically makes the file several times larger.
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No. Detail lost when the JPEG was created cannot be recovered. Converting to PNG preserves what is currently there and prevents further loss on future saves, which is its real benefit.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPEG cannot store transparency, so there is none to carry over. The PNG will have the same solid background as the JPEG. Removing a background is a separate operation.
