Etsy is the most forgiving of the marketplaces about background and the least forgiving about size: 2,000 pixels on the shortest side and a file under 1MB pull against each other, and its grid crops the first photo to a square thumbnail, so a tall photograph loses its top and bottom before anybody clicks.

What size should an Etsy listing photo be?

Independent references consistently report at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, below which the zoom view stops working, together with a file under 1MB. Etsy's own help article could not be read from here to confirm either figure, so the page labels both as consensus rather than as a published requirement.

Why does my photo look cropped in the search grid?

Because it is. The first photo is cropped to a square thumbnail, so a tall or wide photograph loses whatever hangs over. The practical consequence is to leave room around the product rather than filling the frame edge to edge - the opposite of what Amazon's main image wants, which is why these are two pages rather than one.

Does Etsy require a white background?

Not the way Amazon's main image does, and that is a genuine difference between them. Etsy's marketplace is built around styled and lifestyle photography, so a background with context is normal there. This page does not fail an image for having one.

What can this not check?

Whether the photograph represents the item accurately, whether it is yours to use, and everything about styling and lighting that decides whether somebody clicks. It measures the file; the judgement is yours.
