Supported formats

This tool accepts PNG files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.

Because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels, EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS coordinates does not carry into the result. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photographs stay the right way up. Embedded colour profiles are also dropped and the output is saved as sRGB, which can shift colours slightly in wide-gamut photographs. Animated files are refused rather than being flattened to a single frame.

Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF keep the transparent background?

Yes. AVIF has a full alpha channel, so a PNG with a transparent background converts without a white box appearing behind it - unlike converting to JPEG, which has no alpha channel at all and has to paint something underneath. If you are converting a logo or a cut-out, AVIF keeps it intact.

The AVIF option is greyed out. Why?

Because your browser has no AVIF encoder, and this page asks it before offering the format rather than afterwards. Only Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave) can write AVIF at the time of writing; Firefox and Safari display it but cannot create it. The alternative would be to let the conversion run and hand you a file called .avif that is really a PNG, which is what a browser returns when it is asked for a format it cannot write. Your PNG is unchanged - convert it in a Chromium browser, or pick a different target format here.

Can I convert a whole folder at once?

Yes. Add as many PNG files as you like and each one is decoded and written back out as a AVIF in turn, then downloaded together as a ZIP. Nothing about a PNG to AVIF conversion varies per file, so there is no setting to get wrong halfway through a batch. A file that is damaged or is not really a PNG is refused as you add it, named individually so you know which one, and the rest of the batch is unaffected.

Is my PNG uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes the PNG and writes the AVIF itself, using encoders it already ships with, so the file never leaves your device. That also means there is no size limit imposed by our bandwidth - only by how much of the decoded PNG your device can hold in memory at once, which is why a very large image can fail on a phone and succeed on a laptop.
